Why Is My Heater Blowing Cold Air? Causes and Fixes

Subzero Cooling and Heating AC tune-up schedule, two tune-ups per year

There is nothing worse than turning on the heat on a chilly Treasure Coast morning and feeling cold air pour out of the vents. The good news: it is often something simple. Here are the most common reasons your heater is blowing cold air, and what to do about each one.

1. Your thermostat is set to “ON” instead of “AUTO”

This is the number one culprit. When the fan is set to ON, it runs constantly, even between heating cycles, so it blows room-temperature air when the burner is not firing. Fix: Switch the fan setting from ON to AUTO, so the fan only runs when the system is actively heating.

2. The system just needs a minute to warm up

When a heating cycle first starts, it can take a minute for the heat exchanger or heat pump coil to warm up. A short burst of cooler air at startup is normal.

3. A dirty air filter

A clogged filter chokes airflow and can cause the system to overheat and shut off the burner for safety, leaving the fan blowing unheated air. Fix: Check your filter and replace it if it is gray and dusty.

4. The pilot light or ignition has failed (gas furnaces)

If the burner cannot ignite, the fan may still run and push cold air. Ignition problems usually need a technician.

5. Heat pump issues (most Treasure Coast homes)

Most homes here use heat pumps. A heat pump can blow cool air if it is low on refrigerant, the reversing valve is stuck, or it is running a defrost cycle. These need a professional diagnosis.

6. Tripped breaker or overheating

If part of the system has lost power or overheated, the fan can run without the heat. Check your breaker panel for a tripped breaker.
