Seeing smoke — or what looks like smoke — coming from your air conditioner is alarming, and for good reason. Sometimes it’s harmless, but sometimes it signals a serious electrical or mechanical problem. Here’s how to tell the difference and what to do, from the team at Subzero Cooling & Heating in Port St Lucie.

First: is it actually smoke?
On humid Treasure Coast mornings, AC vents can release a harmless white mist or fog when cold air meets warm, humid air. That’s just condensation and nothing to worry about. Real smoke is different — it’s gray or black, often comes with a burning smell, and doesn’t disappear quickly. If you smell burning plastic, rubber, or electrical odor, treat it as serious.
If you see real smoke or smell burning — do this now
- Turn the system off immediately at the thermostat and at the breaker.
- Do not turn it back on.
- If you see flames or heavy smoke, leave the home and call 911.
- Once it’s safe, call a licensed HVAC technician before running the system again.
Common causes of smoke from an AC
1. Electrical problems
Burning wires, a failing capacitor, or an overheating control board can produce smoke and a sharp electrical smell. This is the most dangerous cause and needs a professional right away.
2. A burned-out or seized motor
The blower or condenser fan motor can overheat and burn, releasing smoke and a hot, acrid odor. A seized motor under strain is a fire risk.
3. Dust burn-off (heat mode)
The first time you run heat each season, dust on the heating element can burn off and create a light, short-lived haze and smell. If it clears within 10–15 minutes, it’s usually normal. If it continues, shut it down and call a pro.
4. Oil or debris on components
Leaked oil or built-up debris hitting a hot motor can smolder and smoke.
Don’t risk it — have it inspected
Smoke from an air conditioner is one of the few HVAC issues you should never “wait and see” on. The cost of an inspection is tiny compared to the risk of an electrical fire.
